1st Steps
Check List of Things-To-Do

  1. Develop and/or update your list of Associates that you believe can be helpful in your search. (Business Associates, Friends, Family, Church, etc.)

  2. Are you looking for the same type of position or are you considering a career transition? If the same or similar position, go to the next step in this list.  If you are considering a career transition then click here to see a list of helpful Internet sites.

  3. Develop a list of What you have to offer for specific targeted positions/companies. Click Here for a form that will help you prepare that listing.

  4. Update/Develop some Resume(s) (check the Reading List on this site for help)
  5. Have your resume(s) reviewed by an expert for critical content and current trends.  (See the LINK for the Barrington Career Center on this site)

  6. Develop your ELEVATOR speech (short 30 - 90 second sales pitch) e.g. Click Here

  7. Develop a list of Resources to be used (see the LINKS page on this site and download the FULL list of links)

  8. Develop letter(s) for mailing to your list developed in point 1 on this page

  9. Develop an e-mail for sending to your list developed in point 1 on this page

  10. Develop a list of Placement and Retained Search firms to be contacted (in the FULL list of links)
    a)  Develop letter(s) for contacting them
    b)  Send letters with attached Resume

  11. Review Internet Resources (in the FULL list of links)
    a) Develop e-mails for contacting them
    b) Send e-mails to the selected firms and keep a record of e-mails sent
    c) Get listed on the primary Job Boards (Monster, Career Builders, etc.)
    d) Get on the Social Networks (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
        - Make sure to put your LinkedIn Address on your Resume
    e) SPECIAL NOTE: You may want to consider whether or not to send just a letter or to include a resume. Discuss this with the expert mentioned in point 5.

  12. Consider having some business cards printed for your interviews (see http://www.vistaprint.com for some inexpensive and sometimes FREE business cards)

  13. Publications
    a) Local Newspapers
    b) Papers from a desired relocation destination
    c) Review resources available at your local library

  14. Join some Networking Groups and/or Job Club
